Ease a backache (without meds)

Massage was among the top-rated pain releivers-as effective as powerful narcotics.  Surprised? Doctors aren't.     Hands-o therapy activates the body's parasympathetic nervous system to relax muscles and increases the levels of brain chemicals, like dopamine and serotonin, that help control pain. Doyle Chiropractic Clinic serves the communities of Bothell, Kenmore, Woodinville, and Lake Forest Park. Watch Out For the Lawnmower

Summer is when lawnmowers come out weekly.  It is also the time of the year when there are serious accidents to kids because of lawnmowers.  In 2007, according to the Consumer Product safety Commission 210,000  people - 16,200 of the children - were treated in doctors' offices, clinics and emergency rooms for lawnmower-related accidents.  The tragedy is that most of these accidents to children could have been prevented if the adults operating the machines had been more careful or just used common sense procedures.   Many of the new lawnmowers certain safety features, but still won't help if a child runs in front of the mower, or while sitting in front of an adult on a riding mower, falls off and gets his foot caught in the blade.  Here are some safety precautions: - Keep children out of the lawn area while mowing - If a child enters that area TURN off the machine immediately - Learn how to turn off the machine quickly and always leave all the safety features-guards, shi

The Many Facets of Pain

For most of us, pain is one of those things in life that we do our best to avoid, get rid of, or try to ignore. Why wouldn’t we? It hurts! But did you know that pain can be considered a great blessing? Without pain, you could never learn from experience how detrimental certain things in the environment can be to your health. Without pain, you may otherwise continue down a path that puts you directly in harm’s way. Without pain, and its contrast to joy, how could we ever really know what makes us feel good? Pain is popular subject these days. A recent issue of a national news magazine was entirely devoted to the subject. Topics discussed included chronic pain, referred pain, intractable pain, and traditional and alternative methods used to treat it1. The bottom line: there are a lot of different types of pain, and many different ways to alleviate it.  Pain classifications include Acute pain – immediate onset of pain caused by physical trauma and resulting inflammation. How Do Multivitamins Benefit Your Health?

Multivitamins are a long-time staple in the ever expanding world of supplements. They have been around for decades and have been the subject of much debate among health researchers. Can multivitamins actually help prevent serious diseases? The debate is still not over. However, most health professionals agree people in North America do not eat enough healthy foods and frequently fail to meet their daily minimum nutritional requirements. Studies show calcium, magnesium, vitamins C, D and E are especially low in our population.  Other factors also contribute to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Many fruits and vegetables grow in nutrient deficient soil. Today’s produce often has much lower levels of nutrients compared to only a couple of decades ago. To make matters worse, fruits and vegetables lose even more nutritional content during transport and storage. The support for daily multivitamin use is confirmed by a number of well-regarded medical institutions, including the  Harvard M

The Importance of Vitamin D

The northwest's dreary winters are infamous for inducing depression.  but being starved for sunlight can do more than kick you into a psychic hole. A growing body of evidence suggests it can raise your risk of cancer, increase susceptibility to heart attack, diabetes and other disorders, and at least partly account for the region's sky-high rates of multiple sclerosis. The reason is vitamin D, an essential nutrient produced in abundance by the skin exposed to the sun's rays.  Long dismissed as being important mainly for strong bones, the so-called sunshine vitamin is now recognized as a key player throughout the body, including the immune system. Experts say vitamin D deficiency is much more widespread than previously believed-especially in northern climes like Washington, where solar radiation from October to march is too little to maintain healthy levels.
