Chronic Disease and Exercise

by Corner on Wellness In recent years, study after study has shown that physical activity is one of the top factors in lowering the risk of developing chronic disease. Risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer are lowered by consistent, moderate exercise. These remarkable findings have profound implications. Exercise now becomes much more than a quick fix to get yourself ready for the summer and summer clothes. Exercise is now known to be a critically important life-prolonging activity. If you're concerned about diabetes - exercise. If you're concerned about heart disease - exercise. If you're concerned about cancer - exercise. Exercise is not all there is to do, of course, but if you're not exercising, you're missing a key factor in maintaining good health. Of course, no one is going to start exercising because they think they "should". Exercise is always a choice. Federal guidelines recommend 30 minutes of exercise five times a

Living with pain

by Corner on Wellness Chronic disease is a major problem in U.S. health care. More than one-third of Americans have one or more chronic diseases, including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The personal costs to patients and families are often severe, daily, and ongoing. The economic costs to society are almost $1 trillion annually.1 Heart disease includes high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, coronary artery obstruction, angina, and heart attacks. Most of these conditions represent a chain of events. Left untreated, of course, high blood pressure is a leading cause of heart attack and stroke. Most cases of diabetes develop from a pre-diabetic state which is also known as insulin resistance. Insulin - a hormone produced by the pancreas - is necessary for cells to be able to absorb glucose from the bloodstream and use the glucose for energy. If cells become insulin resistant, glucose stays in the bloodstream, leading to a pre-diabetic condition. Left untreated, pre-diabetes

Exercise and Nutrition for Kids

by Corner on Wellness We're in the middle of a raging epidemic affecting America's youth - the obesity epidemic. The number of American adolescents who are obese increased 300% in the last 40 years. This is a problem that can potentially affect every family. The good news is that in almost all cases, obesity is a lifestyle disorder. In other words, children become obese because of behaviors learned from their friends and their parents. Healthy eating and regular exercise are the two critically important steps to take to help ensure your child retains an appropriate weight. With respect to healthy eating - Eliminate all trans fats from your children's diet - this includes almost all fast foods Cut down on sugary drinks Serve at least five portions of fresh fruits and vegetables every day Serve complex carbohydrates such as whole grains Serve lean meat, fish, and poultry Count calories! Children need at least an hour of physical activity every day. This incl

Chiropractic for kids

Kids can get checked, too. Do kids need regular blood pressure check-ups or regular tests of their blood glucose levels? Probably not - these simple procedures can be done during a child's annual physical. But kids are very active and more frequent chiropractic check-ups are usually a good idea. Most of us were introduced to chiropractic care when we were adults - and we had to play catch-up for however long a period of time before we really began to feel healthy again. If we began chiropractic care as a younger adult, it probably didn't take too long to restore good health. If we were older - well, the process probably took more time. If chiropractic care is valuable for you, imagine how valuable it is for your children. Kids are natural explorers - they run, jump, climb things, fall down, and bounce around. 1 And, kids are resilient - this ability to recover quickly is one of the great benefits of being very young. Occasionally, one of these activity-related injuries impacts

Modern Stress

This is turning out to be a pretty tough century. Or at least so far. The recent earthquake-like shocks in the economy have impacted everyone, and most people's stress levels are sky-high. Jobs have been lost, retirement savings have shrunk drastically, and energy prices are rising again. Economic stress leads to real physical stress. Stress is more than just a state of mind. Stress has real physical components, including tight muscles, headaches, difficulty falling asleep and restless sleep, abdominal pain, allergies and asthma, inflammation, and high blood pressure. Some results of stress may have long-term consequences. Prolonged high blood pressure, for example, may lead to heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Long-term inflammation may lead to weight gain, diabetes, and even kidney disease. Of course, we could have stress because we have stress. We're stressed, and now we begin worrying about all the things that could go wrong because we are under stress. Not a good pla

Straight talk on health care

In 2009 there's been lots of conversation about health care, both at the federal and state levels.1-3 Not all the talk has been friendly. Those favoring broad reforms describe serious problems in the health care "system". Those opposing change have spread rumors about impending "socialized medicine". Whatever the outcome, chiropractic health care continues to address many of the real shortcomings of the current health care situation in the United States. First and foremost, chiropractic care focuses on the patient. So much of health care is focused on the profit-taking bottom line. Necessary services are denied coverage and unnecessary services are prescribed, all to further some faceless organization's return on investment. Chiropractic care has one goal in mind - to help the patient be healthy and get well in the fastest amount of time possible. Other forms of health care talk but chiropractic walks the walk. Chiropractic health care is truly patient-cente

Eat five fruits and vegetables a day

It's the rare child who actually wants to eat fruits and vegetables. Kids are bombarded by television and radio ads for cereals, candy, and chips that contain huge amounts of sugar and large quantities of saturated fat. The sugar craving begins in childhood - kids quickly develop a taste for sweets. To a child's sugar-sensitized palette, the complex sugars contained in fruits and vegetables are a poor substitute. We carry these habits into adulthood and our long-term health suffers as a result. Twenty-four hours is not enough time in the day for most of us, and many consistently choose fast foods as a means of satisfying our need for food and a method for limiting the amount of precious time we spend on meal preparation. But fast foods are not really food in the sense that the nutrition they provide is minimal. Fast foods are essentially empty calories. In the 1950s and 1960s a well-known health-related slogan was "an apple a day makes the doctor away". This advice re

Massage Therapy

We provide a variety of techniques to help promote injury recovery, health maintenance, and stress management in a professional, warm atmosphere. Swedish Massage A Swedish massage is a full body massage designed to promote general relaxation. Using long gliding strokes, the therapist will soothe your muscles and nerves, easing tension and stress. This form of massage is wonderful for increasing oxygen and reducing body toxins, while improving circulation and flexibility. Deep Tissue Massage This technique goes deeper into the muscle tissue to reduce spasms and scar tissue that often result from chronic injury or overuse. The therapist will use a combination of Swedish and deep tissue massage to enhance circulation and bring relief to the affected areas. Sports Massage A therapeutic massage focusing on a specific muscle group. Depending on the needs of the athlete, a variety of techniques are used including classic Swedish strokes, cross-fiber friction, pressure-point work, and joint mo

I was just in a car accident, now what

You're in your car, relaxed, waiting at a stoplight. Suddenly you hear screeching of tires behind you and the harsh sound of metal hitting metal. In the split second before you can brace yourself, you feel your car moving forward from an unseen force! As your head starts to clear, you realize something is terribly wrong. What you do in the next few minutes could affect you for the rest of your life. How can I prevent whiplash injuries? Since car crashes are the major cause of acceleration/deceleration injuries, defensive driving skills can help. Be sure your taillights and turn signals are working properly. Allow enough stopping distance in front of you. When you slow down or stop, always check your rear view mirror to see if the driver behind you is paying attention. Prevention is the best defense against whiplash because there is not much you can do once you are impacted. The position of your headrest is also critical - make sure that it is level with the top of your head to guar

Neck Pain

One of the first things we need to know is how long have been having neck pain? "It started this morning when I woke up." If it started this morning, you more than likely slept wrong or with too many pillows. "It started a couple of days ago." Does your neck pain change from morning to evening? Do you feel tense or stressed out? If your neck pain gets worse during the day it more than likely related to your stress levels or your activities while you are working. It is common for people under a lot of stress to recover overnight and feel better in the morning and then have things tighten up while they are at work. Emotional stress is a common factor in short term neck pain. If you have a job that involves sitting at a work station, it is likely that you do not have an ergonomic set up. The physical stress from sitting this way causes neck pain as you try to adjust to the poor position of a monitor and keyboard. "It started after my car accident." If you h
